Writer Benjamin Miller – not his real name – was thriving in early 2023. He led a team of more than 60 writers and editors, publishing blog posts and articles to promote a tech company that packages and resells data on everything from real estate to used cars. But one day, Miller’s manager told him about a new project. “They wanted to use AI to cut down on costs,” he says.
A month later, the business introduced an automated system. Miller only had a few months to adapt before he got news of a second layer of automation. Going forward, ChatGPT would write the articles in their entirety, and most of his team was fired. The few people remaining were left with an even less creative task: editing ChatGPT’s subpar text to make it sound more human.

In July 2024, the National Bureau of Economic Research issued a report from the researchers on an income-transfer project conducted in Illinois and Texas. It has generated global attention, with some commentators saying it undermines the case for basic income, others that it supports the case for it.
This note is a critique of the project, and one point should be made very firmly at the outset: This experiment was not a test of basic income. Anybody claiming otherwise is either unfamiliar with the concept of basic income or is being disingenuous.

In a study conducted by OpenResearch, individuals who consistently received basic income payments displayed an increased inclination towards entrepreneurship. They were more open to taking risks and investing in new business ventures.
This consistent income provided them financial stability and independence to experiment with entrepreneurial initiatives. Adding to this, the study revealed that these entrepreneurs significantly benefited local economies by creating jobs and promoting innovation.

04. und 05. September 2024, Freiburg
Am 4. September 2024 stellt David Casassas sein neues Buch Unconditional Freedom: Universal Basic Income and Social Power (2024) an der Universität Freiburg vor. Die von der Universität Freiburg in Kooperation mit FRIBIS organisierte Veranstaltung bietet eine Diskussion mit dem Autor.
Am darauffolgenden Tag, dem 5. September 2024, veranstaltet FRIBIS einen Expert:innenworkshop mit dem Titel “Basic Income as an Exit Device: Possibilities and Challenges” im Liefmann-Haus. Der von Jurgen De Wispelaere und Fabienne Hansen organisierte Workshop versammelt Befürworter:innen und Kritiker:innen der Exit-Option und deren Rolle in einer Grundeinkommengesellschaft.
An article to better inform the discussion of the results of the OpenResearch unconditional basic income pilot experiment.
In this article, I will explain the nuances and how the results of this pilot provide some new info but mostly replicate the findings of previous experiments going back to the 1970s and only further demonstrate that what's at stake here is real freedom and the perceived danger it poses to those who benefit from the widespread lack of that freedom.

So haben wir uns von der Sendereihe "5 Minuten Grundeinkommen" für unser Projekt inspirieren lassen. Susanne und Hans vom Verein "Thüringer für Grundeinkommen" haben schon über 40 Sendungen im Bürgerradio ENNO gestaltet.
