The titans of AI say they're coming for your job, but UBI will solve everything. Do they have a point?
Three years ago, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published an essay dubbed “Moore’s Law for Everything,” in which he claimed artificial intelligence would soon drastically reshape our world. “As AI produces most of the world’s basic goods and services, people will be freed up to spend more time with people they care about, care for people, appreciate art and nature, or work toward social good,” he claimed. Altman’s vision of the future was a dramatic departure from the present. According to him, software and robots would soon take over much of the global economy, effectively liberating humans from most forms of work.

In July 2024, the National Bureau of Economic Research issued a report from the researchers on an income-transfer project conducted in Illinois and Texas. It has generated global attention, with some commentators saying it undermines the case for basic income, others that it supports the case for it.
This note is a critique of the project, and one point should be made very firmly at the outset: This experiment was not a test of basic income. Anybody claiming otherwise is either unfamiliar with the concept of basic income or is being disingenuous.

In a study conducted by OpenResearch, individuals who consistently received basic income payments displayed an increased inclination towards entrepreneurship. They were more open to taking risks and investing in new business ventures.
This consistent income provided them financial stability and independence to experiment with entrepreneurial initiatives. Adding to this, the study revealed that these entrepreneurs significantly benefited local economies by creating jobs and promoting innovation.

04. und 05. September 2024, Freiburg
Am 4. September 2024 stellt David Casassas sein neues Buch Unconditional Freedom: Universal Basic Income and Social Power (2024) an der Universität Freiburg vor. Die von der Universität Freiburg in Kooperation mit FRIBIS organisierte Veranstaltung bietet eine Diskussion mit dem Autor.
Am darauffolgenden Tag, dem 5. September 2024, veranstaltet FRIBIS einen Expert:innenworkshop mit dem Titel “Basic Income as an Exit Device: Possibilities and Challenges” im Liefmann-Haus. Der von Jurgen De Wispelaere und Fabienne Hansen organisierte Workshop versammelt Befürworter:innen und Kritiker:innen der Exit-Option und deren Rolle in einer Grundeinkommengesellschaft.
An article to better inform the discussion of the results of the OpenResearch unconditional basic income pilot experiment.
In this article, I will explain the nuances and how the results of this pilot provide some new info but mostly replicate the findings of previous experiments going back to the 1970s and only further demonstrate that what's at stake here is real freedom and the perceived danger it poses to those who benefit from the widespread lack of that freedom.
